Kuhne was a strict vegetarian and forbade his patients the use of salt and sugar in the diet. His conceptual view of the cause for disease was that the average human body was overburdened with toxins that eventually led to degenerations of the internal organs. He stressed the importance of proper digestion and of avoiding constipation.
Kuhne successfully experimented with various methods using water as a healing agent. He created a unique hydrotherapy panacea, including the friction sitz bath and hip baths.
Kuhne demonstrated through his doctrine of the Unity of Diseases that the origin of all disease is a lifelong accumulation of waste matter and toxins in the body.

Priessnitz is credited for laying the foundations of Nature Cure. He revived techniques such as spas, bathing, and drinking water and applied to patients in his spa in Gräfenberg.
Priessnitz developed different types of baths (e.g. eye baths, foot baths, and head baths) focused on healing different body parts and various afflictions including paralysis, insanity, and poisoning.
In 1822 he opened a sanatorium and spa for his patients, which included members of Royal Families too. Priessnitz’s practice spread to the U.S. soon after becoming established in Europe. This triggered the opening of several hydropathic medical schools and medical journals in the U.S. which led to scientific experiments on the effects of known water cures; and the development of new methods and theories about the field.
